Executive Summary

Axians Global (“Axians”) assessed the interoperability of Cohesity NetBackup with Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage. The goal of the assessment is to validate that Cohesity NetBackup is interoperable with Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage.

During the assessment, all interoperability test cases were successfully completed. Cohesity NetBackup can use Huawei OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage as Cloud Storage to back up and restore VMware.

Axians has determined that Cohesity NetBackup backup and restore jobs will function with Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage for the following scenarios:

1.Environment Configuration

1.1 Network Diagram

Test Scenario 1: In the VMware backup scenario, the NetBackup backup server backs up VMs to the Cloud Storage (no deduplication). Figure 1.1 below illustrates the network architecture.

Test Scenario 2: In the VMware backup scenario, the NetBackup backup server backs up VMs to the MSDP Cloud Immutable Storage. Figure 1.2 below illustrates the network architecture.

2. Test Preparation

2.1 Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage Pre-configuration

2.1.1 Create the vStore, AK, SK, DNS Zone

2.1.2 Create the Logical Port

2.1.3 Configure the Native S3 authentication certificate

2.1.4 Configure the Object Service

2.1.5 Create the Bucket


a. The bucket serves as Cloud Storage (no deduplication).


    b. Enable the Object Versioning and configure the WORM mode of None type. The bucket serves as MSDP Cloud Immutable Storage.

      2.2 Backup Server Pre-configuration

      2.2.1 Configure the NBU Cloud Configuration Files

      NetBackup uses cloud configuration files to add support for new cloud providers, and uses device mappings files to add new device support and to enable certain cloud and OpenStorage functionality.

      2.2.2 Configure the network of DNS server

      2.2.3 Import the RootCA certificate

      Write the content of the RootCA certificate to the end of the cacert.pem file.

      3. Test Scenario 1 and Results

      3.1 Add the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage to the backup server as Cloud Storage Server

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage can be added to the backup server as Cloud Storage Server.

      Prerequisites

      The Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, backup server, VMware ESXi have been deployed and configured successfully.

      The S3 services of the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage have been configured successfully, including vStore, AK, SK, DNS Zone, Logical Port and Native S3 authentication certificate.

      Test Procedures


      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Storage servers, click Add to add a cloud storage.


      Step 2: In the Storage type list, select Disk storage servers.


      Step 3: In the Storage type list, select Cloud connector.


      Step 4: In Basic properties, enter all the required information.

      1. Customize a unique name of Storage server name.
      2. Select the Cloud storage provider of Secsmart HyperProtect Data Lake Storage.
      3. Click Add to manually add a region information, including Region name, Location constraint, Service URL, Endpoint access style, HTTP port, HTTPS port.


      Step 5: Select an available media server, and then click Next.


      Step 6: In Access settings enter the required AK and SK. Set advanced settings based on the test requirements, and then click Next.


      Step 7: In the storage server options, adjust the object size according to the test requirements and enable compression, and then click Next.


      Step 8: (Optional) In Media servers, select Add to add any additional media servers or just click Next to skip it.


      Step 9: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click finish to complete the adding.

      Expected Results

      In step 9, succeed to connect to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage and add the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage to the backup server as Cloud Storage Server.

      Test Results

      1. Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Storage servers, click Add to add a cloud storage.

      2. In the Storage type list, select Disk storage servers.

      3. In the Storage type list, select Cloud connector, and then select Start.

      4. In Basic properties, enter all the required information.

      4.1 Customize a unique name of Storage server name.



      4.2 Select the Cloud storage provider of Secsmart HyperProtect Data Lake Storage.



      4.3 Click Add to manually add a region information, including Region name, Location constraint, Service URL, Endpoint access style, HTTP port, HTTPS port.





      5. Select an available media server, and then click Next.



      6. In Access settings enter the required AK and SK. Set advanced settings based on the test requirements, and then click Next.


      7.In the storage server options, adjust the object size according to the test requirements and enable compression, and then click Next.



      8. (Optional) In Media servers, select Add to add any additional media servers or just click Next to skip it.



      9. On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click finish to complete the adding.

      3.2 Add the bucket to the backup server as disk pool and storage unit

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage can be added to the backup server as disk pool and storage unit.

      Prerequisites


      1. The Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, backup server, VMware ESXi have been deployed and configured successfully.


      2. The S3 services of the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage have been configured successfully, including vStore, AK, SK, DNS Zone, Logical Port and Native S3 authentication certificate.


      3. The cloud storage server has been added in section 3.1.

      Test Procedures


      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Disk pools, click Add to add a disk pool.


      Step 2: In the Disk pool options, enter all the required information.

      1. Click Change to select the added Storage server in section 3.1.
      2. Customize a unique name of Disk pool and retain the default values for other parameters.


      Step 3: In Volumes, select a volume from the listed bucket list and click Next.


      Step 4: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click finish to complete the adding.


      Step 5: Click the Add storage unit button at the top of the screen after creating the disk pool.


      Step 6: In Basic properties, customize a unique name of Cloud storage unit and retain the default values for other parameters. click Next.


      Step 7: In Disk pool, select the added disk pool in step 4 and then click Next.


      Step 8: On the Media server tab, select an available media server, and then click Next.


      Step 9: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click save to complete the adding.


      Step 10: Check the bucket data through the S3 Browser.

      Expected Results

      In step 3, succeed to get bucket list.

      In step 4, succeed to add the bucket to the backup server as disk pool.

      In step 9, succeed to create the cloud storage unit.

      In step 10, no NBU profile in the bucket.

      Test Results

      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Disk pools, click Add to add a disk pool.


      Step 2: In the Disk pool options, enter all the required information.

      a.Click Change to select the added Storage server in section 3.1.



      b. Customize a unique name of Disk pool and retain the default values for other parameters. Click Next.



      Step 3: In Volumes, select a volume from the listed bucket list and click Next.




      Step 4: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click finish to complete the adding.




      Step 5: Click the Add storage unit button at the top of the screen after creating the disk pool.




      Step 6: In Basic properties, customize a unique name of Cloud storage unit and retain the default values for other parameters. click Next.




      Step 7: In Disk pool, select the added disk pool in step 4 and then click Next.




      Step 8: On the Media server tab, select an available media server, and then click Next.




      Step 9: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click save to complete the adding.






      Step 10:Check the bucket data through the S3 Browser.



      Test Conclusion

      3.3 Full back up VM to the Cloud Storage

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the backup server can full back up the VM to the Cloud Storage.

      Prerequisites


      1. The Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, backup server, VMware ESXi have been deployed and configured successfully.


      2. The cloud storage server has been added in section 3.1.


      3. The cloud disk pool and storage unit have been added in section 3.2.


      4. The VMware ESXi has been added to the backup server as workloads.

      Test Procedures


      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Protection > Policies, click Add to add a policy.


      Step 2: On the Attributes tab, do the following:

      1. Specify a unique name of Policy name.
      2. Select the VMware of Policy type.
      3. Select the added cloud storage unit as Policy storage.
      4. Retain the default values for other policy attributes.


      Step 3: On the Schedules tab, configure all the necessary schedules. For example, Full and incremental schedules.


      Step 4: On the Clients tab, select the VM to be backed up.


      Step 5: On the VMware tab, select the VMware backup host and retain the default values for other VMware parameters.


      Step 6: Confirm that all options are correct and click Create to complete the adding.


      Step 7: Select the policy and click Manual backup to start the full backup task.


      Step 8: Check the full backup job status on the backup server.


      Step 9: After the full backup job is complete, check the size of backup files on the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage.

      Expected Results


      1. In step 6, succeed to create a Virtual Machine backup policy. No error is reported.


      2. In step 8, the full backup job status is successful. No error is reported.


      In step 9, the backup files are written to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage successfully.

      Test Results

      1. Login the NBU Web UI, go to Protection > Policies, click Add to add a policy.
      2. 2.On the Attributes tab, do the following:

      2.1Specify a unique name of Policy name.




    1. 2.2 Select the VMware of Policy type.



    2. 2.3 Select the added cloud storage unit as Policy storage.



    3. 2.4 Retain the default values for other policy attributes.



    4. 3. On the Schedules tab, configure all the necessary schedules. For example, Full and incremental schedules.



    5. 4. On the Clients tab, select the VM to be backed up.



    6. 5. On the VMware tab, select the VMware backup host and retain the default values for other VMware parameters.



    7. 6. Confirm that all options are correct and click Create to complete the adding.



    8. 7. Select the policy and click Manual backup to start the full backup task.



    9. 8. Check the full backup job status on the backup server. The full backup job status is successful. No error is reported.





    10. 9. After the full backup job is complete, check the size of backup files on the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage. The backup files are written to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage successfully.


    11. Test Conclusion

      Passed

      3.4 Incremental back up VM to the Cloud Storage

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the backup server can incremental back up the VM to the Cloud Storage.

      Prerequisites


      1. The Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, backup server, VMware ESXi have been deployed and configured successfully.


      2. The full backup job in section 3.3 has been performed successfully.

      Test Procedures

      Step 1: Modify VM data and record the status of the VM.

      Step 2: Select the policy and click Manual backup to start the incremental backup task.

      Step 3: Check the incremental backup job status on the backup server.

      Step 4: After the incremental backup job is complete, check the size of backup files on the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage.

      Expected Results


      1. In step 3, the incremental backup job status is successful. No error is reported.


      2. In step 4, the backup files are written to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage successfully.

      Test Results

      1. Modify VM data and record the status of the VM.

      2.Select the policy and click Manual backup to start the incremental backup task.



    12. 3. Check the incremental backup job status on the backup server. The incremental backup job status is successful. No error is reported.





    13. 4. After the incremental backup job is complete, check the size of backup files on the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage. The backup files are written to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage successfully.


    14. Test Conclusion

      3.5 Restore the VM from the Cloud Storage

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the backup server can restore the VM from the Cloud Storage.

      1. The Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, backup server, VMware ESXi have been deployed and configured successfully.


      2. The cloud storage server has been added in section 3.1.


      3. The cloud disk pool and storage unit have been added in section 3.2.


      4. The full backup job has been performed successfully in section 3.3.

      Test Procedures

      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Workloads > VMware. Select the VM that has been backed up and click Recover.

      Step 2: Select the recovery point of the full backup job and click Recover to restore virtual machine.

      Step 3: In Recovery target, retain the default values for all parameters and click Next.

      Step 4: In Storage, retain the default values for all parameters and click Next.

      Step 5: In Recovery options, set all parameters according to the test requirements and click Next.

      Step 6: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click Start recovery.

      Step 7: Check the restore job status on the backup server.

      Step 8: Check the VM status.

      Expected Results


      1. In step 7, the restore job status is successful. No error is reported.


      2. In step 8, the VM restore the status of full backup successfully.

      Test Results

      1. Login the NBU Web UI, go to Workloads > VMware. Select the VM that has been backed up and click Recover.

      2. Select the recovery point of the full backup job and click Recover to restore virtual machine.
      3. In Recovery target, retain the default values for all parameters and click Next.


      4. In Storage, retain the default values for all parameters and click Next.



      5. In Recovery options, set all parameters according to the test requirements and click Next.



      6. On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click Start recovery.



      7. Check the restore job status on the backup server. The restore job status is successful. No error is reported.





      8. Check the VM status. The VM restore the status of full backup successfully.

      4.Test Scenario 2 and Results

      4.1 Add the Media Server as MSDP Storage Server

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the Media Server can be added to the backup server as MSDP Storage Server.

      1. The Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage, backup server, VMware ESXi have been deployed and configured successfully.

      2. The S3 services of the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage have been configured successfully, including vStore, AK, SK, DNS Zone, Logical Port and Native S3 authentication certificate.
      3. Versioning has been enabled for the bucket, and the WORM mode of the None type has been configured.

      Test Procedures


      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Storage servers, click Add to add a MSDP Storage Server.


      Step 2: In the Storage type list, select Disk storage servers.


      Step 3: In the Storage type list, select Media Server Deduplication Pool to local or cloud storage (MSDP, MSDP Cloud, MVG).


      Step 4: In the Basic properties, enter all the required information.

      1. Select an available media server.
      2. Enter the Storage server credentials and then click Next.


      Step 5: In the Storage server options, specify an available media server path as Storage path. Retain the default values for other parameters and then click Next.


      Step 6: (Optional) In Media servers, select Add to add any additional media servers or just click Next to skip it.


      Step 7: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click Save to complete the adding.

      Expected Results

      In step 7, succeed to add the Media Server to the backup server as MSDP Storage Server.

      Test Results

      1. Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Storage servers, click Add to add a MSDP Storage Server.



      2. In the Storage type list, select Disk storage servers.



      3. In the Storage type list, select Media Server Deduplication Pool to local or cloud storage (MSDP, MSDP Cloud, MVG), and then select Start.



      4. In the Basic properties, enter all the required information.

      4.1 Select an available media server.



      4.2 Enter the Storage server credentials and then click Next.



      5. In the Storage server options, specify an available media server path as Storage path. Retain the default values for other parameters and then click Next.



      6. (Optional) In Media servers, select Add to add any additional media servers or just click Next to skip it.



      7. On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click Save to complete the adding.

      4.2 Add the bucket to the backup server as MSDP immutable disk pool

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage can be added to the backup server as MSDP immutable disk pool.

      3.Versioning has been enabled for the bucket, and the WORM mode of the None type has been configured.


      4. The MSDP storage server has been added in section 4.1.

      Test Procedures


      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Disk pools, click Add to add a disk pool.


      Step 2: In the Disk pool options, enter all the required information.

      1. Click Change to select the added Storage server in section 4.1.
      2. Customize a unique name of Disk pool and retain the default values for other parameters.


      Step 3: In Volumes, to configure MSDP to use cloud storage, use the following procedure to create a new cloud volume.

      1. Select the Add cloud volume option.
      2. Customize a unique name of Volume name.
      3. Configure the Cloud cache properties according to the testing requirements.
      4. Select the Cloud storage provider of Secsmart HyperProtect Data Lake Storage.
      5. Click Add to manually add a region information, including Region name, Location constraint, Service URL, Endpoint access style, HTTP port, HTTPS port.
      6. Add a new credential (AK&SK).
      7. Choose the Use object lock option. Configure the Retention mode and Lock duration according to the test requirements.
      8. Configure the Advanced settings according to the test requirements
      9. Choose the Select or add a cloud bucket/container option, and click Retrieve list to get bucket list.
      10. Select the bucket with WORM enabled and click Next.


      Step 4: (Optional)In Replication, click Add to add replication targets to the disk pool or just click Next to skip it.


      Step 5: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click finish to complete the adding.


      Step 6: Check the bucket data through the S3 Browser.

      Expected Results


      1. In step 3, succeed to connect to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage and get bucket list with WORM enabled.


      2. In step 5, succeed to add the bucket to the backup server as disk pool.


      3. In step 6, NBU profiles have been stored in the bucket successfully.

      1. Login the NBU Web UI, go to Storage > Disk storage > Disk pools, click Add to add a disk pool.

      2.In the Disk pool options, enter all the required information.
      2.1 Click Change to select the added MSDP Storage server in section 4.1.

    16. 3. In Volumes, to configure MSDP to use cloud storage, use the following procedure to create a new cloud volume.

      3.1 Select the Add cloud volume option.

      Step 5: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click save to complete the adding.

      Step 6: Check the bucket data through the S3 Browser.

      1. In step 5, succeed to create the MSDP WORM storage unit.


      2. In step 6, no new NBU profile in the bucket.

      Test Purpose

      To verify that the backup server can full back up the VM to the MSDP Cloud Immutable Storage.

      Test Procedures


      Step 1: Login the NBU Web UI, go to Protection > Policies, click Add to add a policy.


      Step 2: On the Attributes tab, do the following:

      1. Specify a unique name of Policy name.
      2. Select the VMware of Policy type.
      3. Select the added MSDP WORM storage unit as Policy storage.
      4. Retain the default values for other policy attributes.


      Step 3: On the Schedules tab, configure all the necessary schedules. For example, Full and incremental schedules. Set the retention period of 1 day.


      Step 4: On the Clients tab, select the VM to be backed up.


      Step 5: On the VMware tab, select the VMware backup host and retain the default values for other VMware parameters.


      Step 6: Confirm that all options are correct and click Create to complete the adding.


      Step 7: Select the policy and click Manual backup to start the full backup task.


      Step 8: Check the full backup job status on the backup server.


      Step 9: After the full backup job is complete, check the size of backup files on the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage.

      Expected Results


      1. In step 6, succeed to create a Virtual Machine backup policy. No error is reported.


      2. In step 8, the full backup job status is successful. No error is reported.


      3. In step 9, the backup files are written to the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage successfully.

      Test Results

      Step 3: Check the incremental backup job status on the backup server.

      Step 4: After the incremental backup job is complete, check the size of backup files on the Huawei OceanStor Dorado All-Flash Storage.

      Step 2: Select the recovery point of the full backup job and click Recover to restore virtual machine.

      Step 3: In Recovery target, retain the default values for all parameters and click Next.

      Step 4: In Storage, retain the default values for all parameters and click Next.

      Step 5: In Recovery options, set all parameters according to the test requirements and click Next.

      Step 6: On the Review page, confirm that all options are correct and click Start recovery.

      Step 7: Check the restore job status on the backup server.

      Step 8: Check the VM status.

      Expected Results


      1. In step 7, the restore job status is successful. No error is reported.


      2. In step 8, the VM restore the status of full backup successfully.

      Test Results

      1. Login the NBU Web UI, go to Workloads > VMware. Select the VM that has been backed up and click Recover.
